LEA SPECIFIC LICENSES

John Hancock Charter School employs and supports educators who possess Professional, Associate, and LEA-Specific Educator licenses.

Professional Educator Licenses are awarded to individuals who have completed an Educator Preparation Program through a University Program or through a USBE approved alternative pathway.

Associate Educator licenses are granted to individuals who are working through an approved Educator Preparation Program as an intern candidate, or while they fulfill requirements of an alternative pathway approved by the USBE to individuals who already meet basic educator training and other requirements.

Local Education Agency (LEA) Specific Licenses are requested and approved by local boards of education/districts/charters. John Hancock Charter School may hire individuals and request an LEA Specific License in areas of scarcity, or otherwise difficult to fill positions. LEA Specific Licenses may also be approved for individuals possessing significant industry experience or expertise to teach certain courses and to help students. Each LEA Specific License is evaluated and approved by the JHCS Board of Education in an open meeting.

LEA Specific Licenses may be approved for Elementary, Secondary, CTE, Early Elementary, and other assignments in all content areas, and endorsements for 1-3 years. At the end of 3 years, each application will be reviewed by the JHCS Board of Education.  John Hancock Charter School is not authorized to provide an LEA-specific educator license in the areas of special education or preschool special education.

More information about the license status of individual educators can be found by using the Educator Look up Tool provided by the USBE.

Parents’ Primary Role in the Education of Children

John Hancock Charter School acknowledges that Utah’s Constitution and laws respect parents’ primary role in the education of their children. The school, along with Utah State Board of Education (USBE), deeply appreciates the trust that parents have placed in Utah’s public education system. The school considers its partnership and support of parents an essential part of the school's mission.

As a parent in Utah, you have parent rights and data privacy rights related to your child's educational records and information. These rights are protected by federal and state laws, including the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and Utah state regulations.

Recent research has emphasized effective family engagement as a key component of school transformation and improvement efforts.  Students with highly engaged families:

  • Attend school regularly
  • Have stronger social skills
  • Earn higher grades
  • Graduate from high school
  • Go on to college or other postsecondary program

A Parent Portal provided by the Utah State Board of Education outlines the basic structure of Utah’s public education system, some of the rights of parents in the direction of their children’s education, and opportunities to engage with and support schools at the state and local level. The portal is available in multiple languages, and USBE offers verbal translation services for further discussions with its staff.
